Said mastermind was actually used to decent effect in the Captain Atom comic, where Cap was going through purgatory and encountered Death in three aspects: as end of things (classic hooded spectre), as welcome release (Gaiman's Death making a rare out-of-Sandman appearance) and as Cosmic Threat (our mastermind).
