Just the bad and the ugly

First the ugly: "Star Trek: Enterprise" renewed. I don't have active disdain for this show like I do "Tru Calling," but of all the Trek series, this one has certainly left me uninspired. Maybe because the genre feels pretty much done, maybe because I thought the whole premise was moronic from day one, maybe it's the damned theme song, I dunno. But I still think the franchise is dead, whether or not it's churning out episodes or not.

And by way of Joe, the bad. How high school poetry has gone afoul, and trust me, I've read bad poetry before. If they really want to crack down on bad poetry, forget the political subversion and go after the doggerel. It's not like it's hard to find.

Anyhow, short version: students aired dissenting political opinions through art. Principal ordered them silenced, art destroyed. Teachers backed them up. Teachers get fired. No child left behind, indeed.

I remember when I was young, I read in history class about censorship during highest poit of the Cold War. And I was very glad to think my country was beyond such ridiculousness. I'm only now coming to terms with the idea that we never really left that mentality; we simply weren't sure where to apply it to for a while.

It really makes me not want to live here sometimes. Free expression is very important to me. It frightens me that if I express myself in one manner, it could make me rich. But if I express myself in another, it could get me fined, censored, or perhaps someday jailed.

Very depressing.
