We don't want no cure for cancer

A new vaccine that protects against cervical cancer has set up a clash between health advocates who want to use the shots aggressively to prevent thousands of malignancies and social conservatives who say immunizing teen-agers could encourage sexual activity.

Urge to kill...rising.

Right. Just like restricting access to contraceptives totally stops teens from having sex.

No, they only fuck in side the bonds of matrimony and want everybody else to do the same.

People need a fucking smack.

Other risks???

I'm just wondering what OTHER unknown health HAZARDS such a vaccine would pose. And what effects it would have on people of varying ages.

Good Grief!

I'll take a flu shot anyday, but when it comes to all these new vaccines and medicines that they are putting out, I want to know more about their testing proceedures. Take for example all these women that went on hormone replacement therapy that are now having MORE health problems.

But, I TOTALLY agree on the point that others are making regarding teens and sex. If they're going to do it, they're going to do it regardless of these types of treatments. In my experience, girls aren't really taught about the increased risk of cervical cancer. The classes I went through growing up concentrated more on scaring us with talk of STD's. (It worked, I'm still scared. Herpes - the gift that gives FOREVER!)

Okay, enough ranting...

*grrrr*

Good freaking lord. Can't these people fixate on something positive? How about working for social justice. Go after the new bankruptcy laws. Work towards universal health care. Raise money for educating women in poor countries, then get them microloans so they can start businesses.

Maybe if these people got laid properly themselves once in a while they would stop obsessing about other people having sex.

I agree. I had a pre-cancerous condition once that would have become cervical cancer were it not detected early. The doctor who performed the non-invasive procedure to preserve my good health gave me a lecture about "sexual promiscuity." I patiently waited for his sermon to end, then explained that the guy I was engaged to had turned out to already be married.

Then I warned him that if he continues to lecture on sexist double standards, he'll get reported eventually to the certification board by someone less understanding than me. I made it clear that I would post online about the incident, in case anyone searches for information to corroborate their claim. And I mentioned a friend who got cervical cancer, her only sexual partner to date then being her abusive father. I doubt she would be very understanding.

Some folks really need a reality check.

On a lighter note, I wish people would stop with the assumption that only teenaged girls should get the vaccine. In my opinion, all women of every age should get it. There's no telling who's encountered what strains of HPV and who hasn't. I really don't think there's any point in leaving women at risk.

One news report I saw about this a few days or weeks ago included some doctor recommending that this simply be added to the required immunizations all girls under age 12 get (in addition to any efforts to immunize those over 12, obviously) so that eventually, all women in the country will be covered and this form of cancer will basically become a bad memory.

Then we can get back to arguing whether or not the government should hand out free condoms to 10 year olds.

Putting this whole thing another way:

Someone finally finds the believed-proverbial cure for cancer, and certain groups still manage to find a dark cloud in which to hide the silver one.
