Hans Smith, virtual athlete

If you're playing MLB 11 The Show this year and you come across Hans Smith, #86, on the St. Louis Cardinals' 40-man roster and start wondering who this kid is and how you've followed Cardinals baseball obsessively for years and you've never heard of this kid...well, this is who he is. And it's awesome.

Back in the late 1990s I had one of the various baseball simulators for the PC (Front Page Sports?), and I used to watch games on it in real-time and do the radio announcements for the virtual team. I used the immersive nature of the game to become not a player, but a broadcaster -- something I could theoretically do in real life, but likely will not ever have the chance.

This guy? I'm not worthy to carry his cleats.

Nice link, Sigma. Thanks for sharing it.

Oh, you'd be surprised who they'll let announce sporting events anymore (four words: "boom goes the dynamite"). And actually, that sounds like something I would've done, but by the time FPS came out, I was all burnt out on sports broadcasting already....

You never know. Greater announcers have sprung from humbler soil.
