Yes, I'm enjoying this. But I'm also a bit jealous; I've never lived through an noticeable earthquake.

Move to Alaska for a year or two. The minor ones quickly become routine, and if you're lucky you'll get to experience a proper jolt somewhere in there. :)

I confess I'm not adverse to lingering in Alaska for a time. It's just a matter of getting there. It's a hell of a drive, and I'm not really comfortable with flying anymore, and bodies of water just do not agree with me. But assuming the travel were a non-issue, I'd like to see it someday....

The good news is, once you're there, it's difficult enough to leave that no one will fault you your hermetic tendencies. :)

America vs Japan (Japan is Smarter)

Never mind the antiques in the store behind the two guys with the knocked over beer!

Had I not been driving, I probably would have had a better story. I was listening to the radio and all of a sudden they were like, "omg, did you feel that?!!" and then they said it was an earthquake and people were calling in about it.

I was driving through Greensboro at the time and seeing as how it shook the entire east coast all the way up to Canada, yeah...it's a shame I didn't notice! I'm just assuming it was what caused the bumpy feeling that I thought was the wind or my tires. I guess I could make something up. "I was an hour late to my doctor's appointment because I was in close proximity to an earthquake that shook the entire east coast!" What makes that a lie is replacing "and" with "because." So it's almost the truth...!

I think the most awesome thing about the quake so far has been the Twitter propagation outrunning the quake itself -- New Yorkers getting the tweets about the quake, then feeling the quake. (At least you were listening to the radio; I would've had a CD in and not noticed a thing.) Though the information that the Virginia quake was 1/63000th the power of the Japan quake might keep me up at night.

And yeah, it almost leaves you with a moral obligation when something that noteworthy happens, that you have to use it as an excuse. (Glad the doc was able to get you in, regardless, after that drive. I'd have been in tears or homicidal if I'd been turned back. Or both.)

I probably sounded like I was going to cry when I called the receptionist and told her how long I'd just driven. Really, I wouldn't have. I would have driven around some more until I found something to do that made the trip worth something.
