Why this tragedy is really an atrocity

From the October 2001 issue of Scientific American.

A major hurricane could swamp New Orleans under 20 feet of water, killing thousands. Human activities along the Mississippi River have dramatically increased the risk, and now only massive reengineering of southeastern Louisiana can save the city.

Also, if the National Guard is trying to evacuate from a drowning city, maybe you shouldn't shoot at their helicopters. Cretins.

I think I read that SciAm article when it first came out.

In one of my natural resources graduate classes a few years back we actually spent some time talking about exactly why New Orleans was so poorly situated. I'm always amazed at the human capacity to not think or worry about something that isn't right in front of them right now.
Dunno what to think about the shooting at various aid workers. I suppose in any large city you're going to have a fair number of mentally unbalanced people. Said people are probably not going to be very capable of evacuating for one reason or another. Not that I'm excusing it, but I can see how it might happen.
