Crowdsourcing the dynasty

Okay, I'm gonna need your help on this. I have two projects I'm working on for the immediate blogging future. This is one. (The pieces for the second haven't arrived yet.)

So I've been playing with NCAA Football '11's dynasty mode, specifically in conjunction with its TeamBuilder feature, and it's like crack for these grubby little hands. There are over 4000 voiced team names in the game now, and importing custom helmet logos is a breeze. So I need to create a team I can follow for more than a few years, through recruiting, the regular season, the bowl games...everything.

And I have it nailed down to four finalists (though I could always take suggestions for teams I haven't thought of yet).

First up, the Kansas State Thunderbirds. (Over 4000 team names and "Pretty Birds" isn't one of them? Feh.)

Second, the Gotham City Batmen.

Next up, the Reznor University Nailers. (I'll have to use the import-custom-stadium-music option judiciously with these kids.)

And a long-time favorite, the Columbus Mad Cows.

If you've got a better idea, I'd love to hear it -- bonus points, though, if the team name is in the list of voiced nicknames.

Make your choice, and we'll see if we can't dominate the ever-changing world of college football with 'em.

Central Park Squirrels
Greensburg Tornadoes (too soon?)
Austin Powers (groan)

Greensburg Tornadoes (too soon?)

Nah. Those Greensburg people have a sense of humor. Also, I think the high school is now officialy Kiowa County High School, so the Greensburg Rangers (red, white, and blue baby!) are officially available.

i'm still laughing about gotham city batmen. thats awesome.

[identity profile] samson-of-5.livejournal.com 2010-10-28 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Do the Batmen come with the 60's music, Danny Elfman, or the Hans Zimmer tunes? These details are important!
(And I thought Gotham City was based off of Chicago)

[identity profile] aardy.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
The official line from DC is that Metropolis is based on New York City during the day, and Gotham City is based on New York City at night. Take that with a grain of salt, though.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's an interesting dichotomy -- like how Superman represents what a man can be, Batman represents what he has to be...Metropolis is the city of imagination and possibility, where Gotham is where dreams go to die alone in the cold.

I dunno if there was a Gotham/Chicago umbilical pre-Christopher Nolan -- maybe a more seasoned Batophile or Chi-towner can put me straight there. I just always got more of a New York vibe from Gotham, even moreso than Metropolis. I did like Denny O'Neil's quote, though: "Batman's Gotham City is Manhattan below Fourteenth Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November."

[identity profile] samson-of-5.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
When you look at it that way it makes more sense, especially with all the times Superman and Batman seemed to always meet up not even looking for each other.

[identity profile] kansel01.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
This makes me think there has to be some fanfic out there putting Superman & Batman into some kind of Ladyhawke situation.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I fear that the Internet has grown to a point where there's now sufficient fanfic "putting Superman & Batman into some kind of _______ situation" for virtually any value of _______, and I don't even want to start down that road.

[identity profile] aardy.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know, if you're going to have K. Green coach the Columbus Mad Cows, you should have their conference arch-rivals be the Vorpal Bunnies, with coach H. Lee. (I note here that "Bunnies" is indeed on the list of voiced names...) And the thought of the two of them going head-to-head fills me with much glee. Or something.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I would be able to fill out a small conference with the ideas I've had for multiple colleges, though the Vorpal University Bunnies is a brilliant and terrifying little idea that hadn't quite crossed my mind yet (and NCAA '11 supports rivalries nicely -- matchups against your school's fiercest rivals have significance and weight outside of the typical week's clash). My problem is whittling them down to one for a single-team, multiple-year dynasty. I didn't even mention my second-tier candidates like the Kansas Bees or the Presque Isle Lobsters or the ever-present Caribou Vikings. [livejournal.com profile] daethkow will note that "Mexicans" is an option, making the Ron Mexicans a possibility....

[identity profile] daethkow.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
NFLshop.com STILL won't let me put 'MEXICO' on the back of a jersey.

You know what I'd pick. It's not funny (well, not *as* funny) as anyone else's choice, but it has significance, and who knows, maybe you could get Bill Parcells to come back to coach.

If I had to choose from the aforementioned, I think I'd pick the Batmen, just because I like the helmets.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know what you'd pick. Fortunately, there's a huge swath of people who've beaten me to the punch.

[identity profile] aardy.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm obligated to put in a vote for anything related to Presque Isle, as my mother's family was from Presque Isle County, Michigan.

Whittling down too many good ideas is painful, but it sure beats not having enough good ideas...

[identity profile] kansel01.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I really dig the idea of the Reznor University Nailers but I have a hard time getting behind the back story. So Trent Reznor used his fortune to found a university and then named himself head football coach for life? Maybe more believable: a NIN superfan created the university and kidnapped Trent and forced him into coaching. Eh, needs work.

[identity profile] daethkow.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He *is* from the Pittsburgh environs. He's undoubtedly learned a little about football, even just by osmosis.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2010-10-29 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking more along the lines of Trent starting his own university, and in typical NIN tradition, ends up doing the entire thing by himself -- administration, teaching, custodial services, recruiting, IT....

If nothing else, the marching band would be the most terrifying bunch of choreographed musicians ever.

[identity profile] samson-of-5.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Imagine them coming out while visiting. The home team cheerleaders would run screaming from the field and the rest of the game would be nothing but fumbles from the unnerved home quarterback.

Talk about your ace in the hole.

[identity profile] robing.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm obliged to vote for the Mad Cows though the other ones are great, too. I think Coach Kay just found his reason to finally get a PS3.
