In Soviet Russia, LJ updates you

So yes, LJ has struck an iceberg and is taking on water. It's taken a while for (')SUP to take a shot at the Six Apart School of Epic Fail Management, but it looks like they're getting a running start, at least. (I also like the friendly tone of the CNET article -- "affected by the layoff" being the most passive term for "shitcanned" that I've seen lately from someone who wasn't actually cutting the strings.)

So it's time to ask what color your blog-parachute is -- me, I've got my never-updated Blogger site (I should've jumped on it sooner, if only to gank my preferred username from whichever Malaysian cockblocker claimed it and has since done jack with it), my created-last-night (in a prescient trance?) Twitter feed (which I don't plan on using much as I have no mobile devices and will cut off my own hands before I use LoudTwitter, but at least I got my username this time), and the truly crafty have probably stumbled onto my low-key presence in a few other sundry corners of the Internets.

As most of my f-list have already noted, if LJ does take a double-tap to the head in a back alley off Gorky Park (and I don't expect it to disappear tonight or tomorrow but I don't expect to see the end of another year of paid time), the real loss is going to be the communities established via LJ -- my f-list is an unmitigated web of awesome, and I don't see a social service out there that stands to replicate it. But if you haven't backed up your LJ yet -- PC users, grab LJArchive and everybody else try ljdump (points to [livejournal.com profile] alasdair for tracking down the latter) -- now is really the best time. Go now.

Noes! We cannot lose the Goddamn Batman and Scans_Daily and- and- eeeek!

An Italian cockblocker grabbed dvandom.blogspot.com, even though dvandom is my Blogger ID. Grr.

There should be a neologism for ID cock-blocking blogger. "Blogblocker" doesn't quite encompass the level of spite implied. "Cockblogger" is an entirely different time of Internet personality. "Blogcocker" is about the closest I can arrive to that Aristotelian ideal, and yet my brain is trying to invent what else that could possibly mean and I'm successfully stopping it from engaging that line of thought every time....

Wordpress is better than Blogger anyway.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
All of my preferred IDs are blogcocked on WordPress, unfortunately. Though from using WP installed locally, I concur -- it's the gold standard of blogging interfaces right now.

(No, "blogcocked" doesn't quite work, does it?)

Inksome! is a fantastic site. Small and kinda quiet, but worth the time. :3

[identity profile] colorise.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
:/ But if Inksome takes on the kind of load that LiveJournal has--basically, I'm not convinced it won't just collapse under the strain.

How does LJArchive work, exactly? I've noticed that it's showing my icons and will bring up my/other peoples' journals, and it's not just simple text like I originally thought, so I'm wondering... does LJArchive continue to rely on HTML/the LJ website in any way?

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure, but I think it ganks the text of entries/comments (and any HTML therein), keeps track of modification dates to see if they need to be resynced, and slabs it all into a relatively accessible archive.lja file in My Documents.

It looks like the icons are URLs and not copies of the actual images, so those would warrant being backed up separately, methinks.

[identity profile] colorise.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. I've noticed there seem to be some problems with certain entries--I think for length--and I have yet to figure out how to save communities (particularly those that don't belong to me) but for the most part it seems to work really well. Thanks for the recommendation.

I was going to grab aota but some else has it and hasn't even used it in years. Not worried about them bringing down LJ but I will get some use out of the LJArchive. I've been wanting to back up my stuff for a while.

[identity profile] lady-findel.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'll stay with LJ until the end. I don't know if I'll be migrating to another blogging service. I do have a Blogger ID, but since I don't write on LJ often it might be a good time to call it quits.

I put your Blogspot in my RSS-feed and added you on Twitter, if you don't mind!

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think based at the very least on my f-list, I'm stuck on LJ until its screaming finalé. Am still not sold on Blogspot, but...it's there, and Wordpress won't let me have any of my names, so that torpedoes my favored route of escape. At least I got in on the ground floor with Twitter; now if only I had something to say....

And no, no problem at all. Let's just hope I don't have to use 'em any time soon.

I'm not super attached to my username so I'm dragging my heels.

[identity profile] sigma7.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is a pity, as I like your username -- it's a peppy twist on the name. What would you prefer?

When signing up new places lately I've been using bliumchik and labyrinthine according to levels of internonymity.

I got turned on to Insane Journal by a friend today and I must say I think I may like it. I just haven't done much with it yet. Like other posters I'll hang on here until the end because I have a bit invested in my communities here, but I am going to back up everything that's important to me.

Until this afternboon I didn't even realize you COULD back up your blogs so this is really new to me. Thanks for the info.

Hi there, thank you incredibly significantly!
