Former Pro Bowl center Barret Robbins was shot and critically wounded during a struggle with a police officer investigating a burglary at a South Beach office building.

Robbins sustained "multiple gunshot wounds" in the torso Saturday night from Miami Beach police investigating a report of a robbery in the administrative office of a building that houses a nightclub, a gym and a jewelry store, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said. The former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman, who went AWOL during the 2003 Super Bowl, remained in critical condition in the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Robbins' agent Drew Pittman told ESPN's Andrea Kremer.

Nobody really knew who Barret Robbins was before his bizarre behavior before the 2003 Super Bowl, but since then -- despite the fact that he's a Raider and, as such, has questionable humanity at best -- his tale's taken a few twisted and occasionally legitimately sad turns, from depression and bipolar disorder to substance abuse to (causality?) steroid use and brushes with the law. His story's worth a look just for his own personal odyssey. It would be truly tragic if it ended so soon.
