A son trying to save his father from a heart attack died when his heart failed after he couldn't resuscitate his dad.

Carlton Cox, 75, was taking a break from tending to his tomato plants when he had a heart attack Tuesday. His 47-year-old son Marty Cox was sitting beside him and called 911 before trying to save his father's life, according to the family.

After Marty Cox became aware his father couldn't be brought back to life, he called his oldest brother, Terry Cox. Then Marty Cox, the son that never left home, went into cardiac arrest himself.

Now father and son will be buried together Thursday afternoon in Walhalla.

Something like this happened to my neighbors on the farm after I'd moved away, a family a couple of miles down the road (technically, still next-door neighbors). Three kids, wife, husband, and the husband's father lived a few miles away. The husband had a heart attack while the father was over, and the father himself had a heart attack trying to revive him, and they both died. And, last I heard, there was something of a snafu in the inheritance because the husband had died first. Never did hear how that ended up. I should ask.

The wife and family moved into town. When our other neighbors moved into town too, they were neighbors again -- and my brother's just moved into the same part of town, so it's just like old times, except shorter walking times involved.
