...or maybe "tragic" or maybe something else entirely, but it is turning into a damned Greek play.

Police discover decomposing body in home

Officers responding to check the welfare of an elderly woman this afternoon discovered a body in the home that had been decomposing since March, police said.

Maj. John Sidwell said officers responded at about 1:30 p.m. to the home at 316 S.W. Hillside Ave. to check on an 82-year-old woman who hadn't been seen in two days. Officers entered the home and found the woman unresponsive inside, Sidwell said.

During the investigation, officers found the decomposed body of a woman in another room. Sidwell said the woman likely died in March.

The address is Juanita Smith's, 86-year-old would-be survivor of the Bataan Death March (according to previous stories). Either there's an age correction going on here -- which is more than possible -- or things just got even weirder.

ETA: Today's story sheds more light on things, including making the Smith connection official:

Rhone said police officers told him the corpse was that of a woman Smith told neighbors was her daughter. He said the younger woman had driven Smith to work for years -- coming and going "like clockwork" at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. -- but stopped in March.

When asked about the younger woman's absence, neighbors said, Smith told them her daughter had moved to Lincoln, Neb., to attend school.

...

Various ages have been listed for Smith. In the May 2 story, she gave her age as 86.
