Quote of the day yesterday simply has to go to Allison Stewart, filling in for Keith Olbermann on "Countdown," during an interview:

"Christopher Reeve's widow, Dana Reeve, announced today her endorsement of John Kerry's campaign. Will this have any legs?"
Jim Bunning is the 73-year-old incumbent Republican senator from Kentucky, running against Democrat Daniel Mongiardo. He had a commanding lead and needed to self-destruct gloriously to lose the election.

Since then, Bunning has:

--said that Mongiardo looks like one of Saddam Hussein's sons (Mongiardo's ancestry is Italian, for the record, even though they emigrated a century ago)

--told a local TV station that he needed a large police force to protect him from a possible attack from al-Qaida, saying "There may be strangers among us."

--accused Mongiardo staffers of roughing up his wife at a local political shindig

--refused to debate Mongiardo face-to-face, instead doing so via satellite and reading from a teleprompter

...and in the latest glorious bit, today, Bunning was unaware that Army Reserve soldiers in Iraq refused to go on a fuel supply mission, and that one of the soldiers was from Louisville. His defense?

"Let me explain something: I don't watch the national news, and I don't read the paper. I haven't done that for the last six weeks. I watch Fox News to get my information."

Latest polls had Bunning and Mongiardo dead even. Of course, with that last sentence, I think we could get him put in a home.
