Still purple, though

The Collegian has been idiot-proofed. They made the transition to College Publisher, so no more stray HTML, no more 6 MB images on the front page. I think in a few ways it's a colossal cop-out, but in a greater sense, it was obvious they didn't have the staff to give it the attention it needed online. It had to do something, and I guess this is the most rational path available. But it still sticks in my craw. (Yes, I am taking it personally.)

There are still a few bugs in the system (I do wonder what's going to happen to the archives), and the "most popular" stories aren't quite working yet. And there's nothing they can do about the content (don't miss "Hezbollah not terrorists," today's alternate-universe assertion which manages to make Lola Shrimplin the most coherent columnist on the page). And I'm pissed off by news site that arbitrarily break a long piece into several pages (it's all about the page views, isn't it?).

Still, it's not an eyesore, and it's probably going to be a hell of a lot easier to maintain in the long run, given their output of online effort, and should probably break less. I'm sad that it had to happen, but it was probably the right thing to do.
