Can't spell "meme" without "me"

I'm still trying to get my blog legs back -- and recovering from a rather grueling session of Oblivion having started over from scratch mutter mutter -- so why not fall back on the old staple of memetic content?

Funny, because robing pointed out an interesting publication to me a few weeks ago -- Userpicks: Cyber Folk Art in the Early 21st Century (Google cache if their MySQL issues aren't yet resolved). It touches on the propagation of "OMG racecar bling bling" as it filters from metaquotes over into userpicks and results in quite a few variations on the theme rendered in 100x100 format (with shaky transparency via yours truly). Also featured: Oolong the pancake-wearing bunny and iconized variations of the iPod silhouette ads. It's an interesting read, if only to see me get my gender misidentified yet again. *shrug* And yet again, I exist in my ideal state -- as a case study, a warning to others.

Picspam, no-seriously edition

For aardy, because he asked.

It's not huge, but it's what I've had left from April and a few recent additions. I don't know if it's my imagination, my inability to be impressed or the upsurge in Russian-language contributions that I just end up skimming straight over, but it's a hell of a lot harder to find worthy additions. I may have to start revisiting older content, which'd change up the format just a bit. Hrm. And I wouldn't have trackback capacity on any of them, so that makes me feel uncomfortable, but they'd be locally-hosted. Still. Worth thinking about, I guess. ( 18 pics below.... )

Picspam Classic, part zero

Here's an idea of how Picspam Classic would work.

Locally-hosted images, no hotlinking. Unfortunately, these are all pics I've dumped from my web-wanderings into one directory with no information as to their origins. Some are from picspam, some from Digg or Boing Boing or my inimitable f-list.

Consensus seems to be forming that the best picspam solution would be a synthesis of these two approaches -- host the images locally to prevent hotlinking, keep the links to the original posts for credit. I can see that, but I'm still adverse to local hosting, if only because then the original poster doesn't know their images are being seen at all, and that's a worse surprise to happen upon than following hotlinking trails, I think. I dunno. Maybe I'm overthinking this.

I just need a few more dramallamas before the noise becomes too much for my attention span to deal with.
