Good to know that the Collegian is treating Snyder's resignation with all due effort for what'll probably be the biggest story of the calendar year. Instead of actually writing a story, they've posted the text of his farewell verbatim on the front page.

Witness the glory of the front page of the print edition. People, it's a big enough story that even if it happens at 9 pm, you scrap the front page and you redo it (yes, this trumps Web site domain confusion and local recycling efforts).

But if you must treat the story as shabbily as possible by exiling it into red-banner-at-top-land, could you at least spell his name correctly?

You'd think that the law of averages would kick in at some point and they'd be mathetmatically obliged to make just one decision in the process correctly, even accidentally. This is a goddamned travesty.

Here's a shred of what they could've written: ...Come to think of it, though, only Alvarez rebuilt. Snyder built something on an empty lot. He has 135 wins in 17 seasons. In the previous 54 seasons, the Wildcats had won 137 games. For that reason alone, I would be stunned if Snyder doesn't arrive at the College Football Hall of Fame in three years.

*blush* I had to look at that three times before seeing the typo.

Wow.

Oh good grief! Some people just need to be smacked around a bit.

Maybe they were just trying to point out how he was on fire.

No, that doesn't work either. They're just schmucks.

Yeah, what you said.

1. OMG, Snyder's retiring?
2. OMG, they didn't want to redesign their centerpiece? If ever a story could be held for a couple of days, it's probably that one.
3. OMG, Synder? ... When *was* this announced? I'm in no place to cast stones over a misspelling, but damn. At least the press guys in Salina were probably amused.

Dear lord.

I bet they're gonna get some fun letters.

Re: Yeah, what you said.

1. Yup. Can't blame him.
2. Yeah. Their news judgement has been...well, nonexistent this year. There are times sports actually deserves front. This is just laziness. Same for their approach in reprinting his letter sans story this afternoon. If this had been the extent and quality of our coverage back in my day, I would have shot myself.
3. I'm willing to cut them a tiny bit of slack on this. Nobody that I talked to -- including many professors -- saw that on first glance. Some actually stared at it for a great length of time before they realized it (and even after I told them). But it still doesn't excuse mailing in what could've been their golden opportunity to shine.

As M said: Can't wait for the Fourum tomorrow.

Speaking of: got interviewed re: Fourum origins. Any sign of Furnas? I know someone who's lookin' for him.

Hmnh. There is a bit of stark contrast between this and the Asbury thing.

I'll ask George tonight about Furnas -- I know he was going to be hitting the KC area sometime soonish for a conference, too.

Separate thing: Check it!

Elisha Cuthbert's NHL blog. Not enough to make me want to rewatch the Many Misadventures of Kim Bauer, but still. Props to her.

I heard about this when I was driving home for lunch. Rush is on vacation so it gives me more time with "The Herd" on ESPN radio, which is good radio. Colin Cowherd started the hour with the line 'you can tell how good a job is by the amount of time people stay after they're able to retire.' Joe Pa and Bowden, in their 70s, want to keep coaching until their mid 80s. He then switched to the Wisconsin coach and Bill Snyder leaving, late 50s and early 60s respectively.

He spent most of the first half hour singing Snyder's praises, "The greatest turn around in football history, maybe world history. If someone stopped the earth's rotation and got it spinning the other way, then you'd have a bigger turn around. K-State was so bad before Snyder that bad schools scheduled K-State for their homecoming games."

Colin definitely expects him in the Hall of Fame.

I remember being there for the beginning. North Texas was Band Day 1989 and our little school was there. I don't remember details but I remember the celebrating, rushing the field, and the students attacking the goal post.

Later in college some friends and I made the trek to a game, seeing as we had no football. It was still early in the rebuilding but bowl appearances were seeming possible, not just a fluke. I took some oranges from our dorm cafeteria and chucked them on the field, "Orange Bowl Bound Baby!"

In my last year or two in Wichita, Karen and I made it to a game. So much had changed, the new press box, additions to the stands, a full house, an energy in the crowd, and "Another K-State! FIRST DOWN!" An amazing job he did. Kudos Bill Snyder.
