TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- A teenager who is growing out his hair for charity stayed home from class on Thursday after his school said he cannot come back until he cuts it, reported WVTM-TV in Birmingham.

Jackson Baker, 18, still refuses to trim his hair. In fact, Baker now plans to stay home from school every day.

The Tuscaloosa Academy senior said that regardless of the consequences, he is not cutting his hair, even though that means dropping out months before graduation.

"I'm going to be home schooling now until the end of this year," Baker said.

Baker's mane now hangs down 9 inches. He is growing it out to 10 inches so Locks of Love can make a wig out of it for cancer patients.

Baker's grandmother, Libby, died of ovarian cancer six years ago, and she had worn a Locks of Love wig.

I should've done this. Well, if I had, my hair probably would've rejected the person. It tends to be...unfriendly.

Still, kudos for the kid for spitting in the face of zero tolerance. This kid could use his help.

Heh...my hair wouldn't be accepted. One humid day and POOF...it would look like somebody's cat was sitting on top of their head.

Plus, my hair doesn't grow out that long. It grows OUT, not down. Damn thickness.

...because I live in them thar parts and know them thar kids pretty well.

A lot of these kids pull this stuff because 1) they don't want to be in school and 2) it gets them attention. If it's a school rule that his hair be short, then it's a school rule, and he isn't above the law. He has to respect it just like everyone else does. If it's so important, he can wait until after school instead of making a huge deal out of it. This isn't white people pushing him to the back of the bus; it's hair.

Ha! Funny but true. Mine's currently expanding in at least four different dimensions. I think my hair's moving through time.

My hair is pretty darn frizzy, but it was still accepted. The Locks of Love website says they don't take bleached or "chemically damaged" hair. So, I guess you're good if you haven't fallen head first in a vat of acid lately. ;)
