Sirens going off. Bother. Just hope the car survives the hail, hope the birds stay calm.... Edit: Over. Lame. Pea-size hail for, like, half a second and a sneeze of rain. The whisp'ry sirens were the worst part.

THAT WAS THE WORST TORNADO WARNING EVER. Seriously. They cancelled .. oh, it's happening again. WTF?

And I'm looking at some of these radar pictures (on my former media partner, Channel 27) and those are some textbook tornadic radar-hooks that're showing up. But they're hitting Westmoreland, Barnes, Clay Center...but aside from a few icy pebbles, we've lucked out in Manhappiness so far.

Though from what Bruce is saying, this could go on all night. Brrghfft. (82 mph winds, golf-ball-sized hail reported across town; hrm.)

Oh, they sounded the sirens because of the hail, says Pat Collins from Riley County Emergency Management. And one accident from a shattered windshield. Sheesh.

Damn, these storms are moving fast....

Manhattan has the most pathetic tornado sirens ever. I was standing on the steps of West (which is right across from King, where there are sirens) and they were just WIMPY.

You could tell we were a bunch of Kansas farm girls though...30 of us standing out, looking at a funnel cloud as it flew over and taking pictures.

They are not great sirens. At least once they went off at about 5:40 am and I baaaarely managed to hear them over the fan (this was before I started needing Tylenol PM to sleep, and now a tornado coming through the room won't wake me). Feh.

Just wish there was a better storm-watchin' vantage from up here. Too many trees, too many houses. Feh. No fun!

Where'd the funnel go? I haven't seen any since one hopped over the Farm Bureau building in '93....

The serious stuff passed over the airport. Here by CiCo we got hail mostly pea sized, a few up to quarter sized.

Mind you, "serious stuff" included 82 mph winds. That's category 1 hurricane strength.

The sirens are meant for people outside. If you're inside, you're supposed to own a storm radio that automatically triggers on an alert.

Actual Tornado in Washington County

My mom actually called me last night (that's really a big deal for her.) She wanted to let me know about the severe weather in Washington County just in case it made national news (as if! - sarcasm because national news has the strangest criteria for deciding what is newsworthy.) When the sirens went off in her town, she decided to walk 1/2 a block to the hospital for better shelter. On her way there she actually saw the tornado which tore up the landscape south of town and took out one of the Junemans' houses (I don't remember which one - it was a sturdy brick farm house though.) From what she could tell there was someone trapped in the basement for a while, but no one was killed or seriously injured. It sounded like the tornado just missed the Pony Express Station (the big truckstop type gas station along Hwy 36.)

So, there was some excitement from the storm even if you didn't get any. =)
