The Revolution will not be televised

Nintendo's next-gen gaming console is no longer named "Revolution." Instead, it'll be called...sigh..."Wii."

Introducing … Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

As to the "Wii", I think it would be better pronounced with a long I. The Pimp My Snack page is pretty crazy. It makes me sad to see people ruining chocolate in the microwave, though.

My eyes almost rolled out of my head when I read about that this morning. I'm not a Nintendo person anyway, but the Revolution was intriguing me a lot. The new name, though? Gag me. Can I keep calling it the Revolution anyway?

I liked Lore's take: "I guess it could have been worse. It could have been called The Phantom Menace."

Seriously, it's been some time since I've heard an item with any promise flub on a name this badly. I'd been anticipating the Revolution to finish third behind the PS3 and X360, but if this is any indication of their marketing insight, I'd so be selling stock if I had any.

I thought the Revolution was a decent name, actually. I wasn't sure the product would be genuinely revolutionary, but with the gyro-controller, it at least has distinction. Of course, how many fifth-graders are going to be able to invite their buddies over to share the console without burning with embarassment...? "It's the Nintendo...new...game thingy...deal."
