Why Hollywood shouldn't touch Battle Royale. Also why you should see it, with a nice concise summary. Unless you're somehow adverse to violence. Or intense psychological mayhem, I guess. Trailer (for the original) here.

Two problems with this article.

1. The Battle Royale Manga was actually written by an American - Keith Giffen.

2. He's the one New Line plans to get to write the screenplay.

I thought Keith did the translation....

And while I'll never forgive him for what happened to the Legion, his mind is twisted enough to give this the push it needs. Or to just send the whole project spiralling over the edge. I'm not sure an Americanized version of this flick will ever really work, though. (Imagine trying to do a faithful adaptation of the manga, complete with the flashbacks. Never in this country.)

The Levitz-Giffen Legion was the best, agreed (why can't I find my Great Darkness TPB anymore? Waugh!), but the post-Levitz Giffen-Bierbaums LSH were, to me, wretched. I think I'm in a minority on my flist in thinking so ([livejournal.com profile] motteditor and [livejournal.com profile] mightygodking seem to like that run), and while I think it had its moments, as a whole I thought it was horrid and schlocky, trying too damn hard to be dramatic and world-shattering without actually being interesting. And the nine-panel grid made me want to chew my own foot off.

Just added it to my Netflix queue.

I don't know why LJ decided I was anonymous. I had never heard of this movie, but now I am intrigued.
