The area of the brain associated with higher-level thinking, empathy, and guilt is underused by teenagers, reports a new study. When considering an action, the teenage medial prefrontal cortex, located in front of the brain, just doesn't get as much action as adults....

I know a lot of twenty-somethings who underuse that part of their brains, too.

I wonder if it's something that shuts down during those years, or if the area is deficient in younger kids too? Then again, one doesn't really expect a 4 year old to have empathy, but teenagers are starting to act kind of adult in some ways, making the ways in which they haven't matured more obvious by comparison.

Oh, and I know twenty-somethings who underuse their ENTIRE brains. I live above some.
