So Starbuck goes loopy and augers in for no apparent reason on a mission of zero significance. Is this her grand destiny? Mmmm, probably not, unless the BSG creators are aiming beyond "gritty" and beyond "morbid" and seeking to inspire crippling depression in the show's viewers. Which is not out of the question, I have to admit. But I'm thinking there's something more going on. There are several different possibilities:
0) She's dead. Boring, and a shock ending for no reason. Lame.
1) She ejected. Got picked up by the phantom raider that's cleverly masked from the DRADIS (maybe like the fleet's Blackbird Laura), either to further Leoben's twisted little plans or just be a high-value prisoner in a cell or...who knows? Maybe the Cylons have a new Plan since Baltar pulled the 6-3 double play, so to speak. (Or to quote Stripes, "Custer had a plan, too, you know.")
2) She's one of the final five. Very popular theory, this one, but as I've stated elsewhere, I have an idea about being a Cylon -- if it makes your character less tragic, less anguished, then it can't happen. That's why Baltar can't be a Cylon; he wouldn't be a traitor if he'd been one of them all along. Nor Tigh. Maybe Ellen. And I'm not ruling out either Dualla or Anders.
3) She's Something Else. Risky to introduce at this stage in the game, no doubt, when there's been a Cylon/human dichotomy at play since day one. But you can't think that Aurora's accidental, that should Thrace reappear she may shed "Starbuck" and become "Aurora" a la Athena. There're antecedents for this in the original series, but nothing concrete yet in the new series. Still, with the uncanny accuracy and fidelity of prophecy that we've seen to this point -- Hera, the roadmaps to Earth, Brenn, etc. -- you can't think that Starbuck's buildup will be for naught.
I'm worried that we might not get -- not closure as much as a sense of continuation any time soon. There are only three episodes left this season (finale on the 25th stateside), and Katee's shooting a pilot, to boot. So if it's a bluff, it's convincing. But I have a feeling the story these showrunners want to tell isn't quite over yet.
