Sounds like most places in Kansas should have power back by Christmas, but not much sooner. Still 13,000 people without power in Riley County, and that number didn't appreciably fluctuate at all yesterday. (Current count has it down to 12,113, which ain't great, but it's still a thousand people better than it was all of yesterday.) Power fluttered last night and I got a bit...worried.

News from the farm is that they'll be off the grid for the foreseeable future; between the farm and the highway, a five mile stretch, there's 19 utility poles down. That may take a while.

Tomorrow, snow showers; the Weather Channel calls it a "snowy fun day," but I think having electricity is implied in the invocation of "fun."

Westar said it'll be Tuesday before us. I want them to explain to me WHY my half of the street is the only place in the area that can't seem to get the juice. BAH.

I'll have it back...the day I go to Texas, hooray!

Tuesday? The hell? I mean, I know Westar does need an illustrated guide to differentiate between the ever-persistent distinction between its collective ass and a hole in the ground, but it stands to reason that if the infrastructure can support your neighbors, then adding y'all shouldn't require an act of God.

I'm questioning whether we still live in a first-world country.

Yell if you need anything. If nothing else, I've got keys to Kedzie.

My super was running around turning off furnaces and hot water heaters this morning, because they've been trying to get power back on in my complex, but the load spike kills it every time. So, assuming no NEW problems, I should have power by the time I go home today. And I can take a nice long shower.

I'm looking on the bright side: at least we have water. The main transformer going into A-town blew, so the entire town not only has no power, but also no water (how would you like to stay in the same house with all of your relatives, including two children under the age of 5? No thank you, for me.)

Rachel is here and when she found out that I may not have power, she said I can not only stay tonight, but if it's okay with her roommates (and I'm sure it will be because they're both from Abilene and they know me), I can stay the whole weekend there.

I'm also going to basically insist that Kim NOT stay in that house tonight. She actually stayed there last night but it's dropping below 45. I'm like...go to a shelter, to someone else's house, SOMEWHERE. Do NOT stay in that house another night. Hell, go sleep in Wal-Mart.

I'm questioning whether we still live in a first-world country.

Considering the fact that I got my first shower last night in three days, I feel like I live in a third-world country. :P I have never felt so appreciative of electricity before in my life.
