Picspam, giant guinea-pig-fish that still isn't Cloverfield edition

Revelation of the week: the capybara -- a guinea pig the size of a large dog, the world's largest rodent, indigenous to South America -- is considered, by the Roman Catholic Church, to be a fish. This is mainly to allow eating capybara during Lent. Still, the cappy's many things, but "fish" wouldn't be one of the first nine million things to cross my mind.

I was sharing this knowledge with everyone in earshot on Wednesday because it blew my mind. My favorite faculty-person was more than a little baffled by the idea of the capybara (which I can understand), and the next one I ran into showed me his wallet and belt -- made out of capybara. Turns out he's got friends in South America, and he picked up some capabara gear while down south. (And the name "capybara" apparently means "Master of the Grasses," though I prefer to parse it as "Grassmaster.")

And yes, today's content is sparse, but is high in capybara.

And I must say that cat bears a strong resemblace to the dude who runs Mythbusters.

My roommate, Kim, just HAD to see Cloverfield, so she ran out right after she got off work last night at 11 to go to the last showing so she could see it because she couldn't wait. The rest of us were like...it looks STUPID. I personally thought it looked like a mix of The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day.

Kim said it was something similar to the Blair Witch Project, which she actually said scared her when she first watched it. I told her I laughed through the entirity of that movie because it was A-stupid and B-not scary.

Oh, I kinda liked Blair Witch. It was certainly different. But it's funny because I think that's the movie Cloverfield most resembles -- not as much because of the POV shots or the, er, "opening credits," let's say, but because of how people either think it's the absolute bomb or just total dreck.

And I think that's a bit because of your expectation going in: if you're expecting, as cleolinda would put it, MONSTAAAR then you're going to come up a little dry, as all through the character arcs you're going to be tapping your feet wanting more OM NOM NOM NOM. If you actually do invest in those arcs -- whether because you're willing to or because you're already prepared to -- I think you find the movie more rewarding. (And the critter moments, from what I've heard, are pretty effective, especially the biohazard tent.)

But I'm still serious when I say I want to take someone to the movie who's heard *nothing* about it and gauge their reactions when 20 minutes in the movie goes stark raving mad.
