I was pretty disappointed when the first episode of Justice League aired -- seemed a lot of punching, zapping, throwing and flying without the bits that made me like the Grant Morrison-era league. Oh, well, there was J'onn, but there needed to be more before I went completely mad over it.

The Justice League Unlimited approach is apparently just that -- so much background continuity to make the hardcore geek squeal and yet not overwhelm the newcomer. The new Mr. Terrific? Skeets? Amanda Waller? And...Deadshot next week? Not to mention giving Morena Baccarin and Amy Acker air time...yes, this is a good, good thing. Aw, Floyd Lawton, how I've missed you. Now, if only they'd shown the cosmic hand being grappled by one cloaked in green, I'd have been the happiest man on the planet.

If I'm recalling correctly, Deadshot showed up first season, I believe in the first Aquaman episode as he tried to assassinate Aquaman.

There were even more geek squeal worthy background continuity bits in the previous week's episode; Jonah Hex makes a somewhat veiled reference to his time in a post-Atomic War future, and, best of all, the name of the villain who took over a town in the Old West with futuristic tech; Tobias Manning. Which'd be Toby Manning. Which was the real name of the pre-Crisis Terra-Man, who was a cowboy from the Old West who fought Superman with futuristic alien technology (and they even had his winged horse show up!). I need to drop Dwayne McDuffie a note about how much I liked those bits in these eps, as well as requesting a Static spotlight ep set in the present day.

Wow. I remember Terra-Man. And I missed Floyd's S1 appearance -- reason to go DVD hunting, I s'pose....

Dwayne's done a bang-up job -- I'm kinda ambivalent toward Static, but given that this series made a Booster Gold episode fun -- with Mordru! in the background -- I'd definitely tune in. If the Spectre or Quislet turn up, yeah, I think I'll squee, and believe me, nobody wants that.

The last two weeks of JLU have been great. I loved all the references to the past. The Jonah Hex bit was great. Jonah was one of the few western comics that I really liked. They should really bring him back as a Weird West type of character. Maybe a Vertigo title.

There were a few well done Jonah Vertigo mini-series, one of which resulted in DC getting sued by the Winter Brothers musicials who felt two of the villains were based on them.
