December 6, 1917 dawned clear and sunny in Halifax. Before darkness fell, more than a thousand people would die, with another thousand to follow. Nine thousand more would be injured and maimed in the biggest man-made explosion the world had ever seen.

I like days when I learn something -- I never knew about this before. It doesn't have the enigmatic nature of Tunguska, but it does have the human aspect, which makes it much sadder and much more compelling.... And it does explain why Boston gets a tree each year from the pristine and divine countryside that is Nova Scotia.
