A Topeka Police Department helicopter crashed Friday night in a parking lot at Stoffer Science Hall on the Washburn University campus, said police officer Dave Johnson.
Officers who had been in the helicopter apparently weren't hurt, Johnson said....
...The crash occurred about 11 hours after Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten vetoed a resolution that would have reauthorized the city's purchase of a second, new Robinson R-44 for the police department. Council members on Friday appeared unlikely to be able to muster the seven votes needed to override the vote.
Half of the money used to buy the Robinson R-44 had been received by the city in an insurance settlement following its last police helicopter crash, a forced landing that occurred in November 2005 in a pasture near Manhattan. That helicopter's lone occupant, a police officer who was piloting it, wasn't hurt.
The we-want-a-new-helicopter tantrum has been amusing from afar, but the timing is just bizarre -- from the veto-new-helicopter story:
Councilwoman Lana Kennedy, who voted "no" on both resolutions, said Friday she has no intentions of voting to override Bunten's vetoes, "as of now — who knows what the next five minutes will bring, or the next five hours?"
Hrm.
