Snopes on the controversial captions. I like the explanation, actually. Of course, I'm still wondering why this is being talked about more than the half-hearted DIY "evacuation" of an urban center where 1 in 6 families doesn't even have a car....

Another good question

Is why weren't Nat'l Guard forces ready and waiting to move in as soon as the weather cleared. I say Bush on BBC World News trying to defend how slow the recovery effort was moving.

He actually said you couldn't see it coming. Hello, really big storm heading for New Orleans, a city below sea level. A great (explative) many people saw it coming. I'm considering ordering a reprint of the SciAm article and mailing it to him.

OMFG. Couldn't see it coming? We had days of preparation. And the N'awlins crisis scenario's been in the books for ages.

I think the level of inactivity here on the part of the government in general and the Guard specifically is negligent to the point of criminal. I'm no fan of 43's, but I think this might actually be his worst mistake ever, and for once, this one might actually cost him.

Re: Another good question

As long as Bush keeps saying nice things, and Congress reconvenes soon and pushes through a funding bill (whether the money actually ever goes anywhere or not), he'll more than likely keep enough of the country (particularly Red States and those people who don't think past "Hrm. Bad things on TV. President said good things. President's friends said good things. Must mean good things happened") just happy enough that Karl Rove will have the joy of picking the next president, too.

Or maybe he'll just find another country to invade or another government-killing, deficit-raising tax break to give, or another Social Security plan in order to pull everyone's attention away from his problems. He's counting on Americans' chronic miniscule attention spans.
