A leaf on the wind

Saw Serenity, enjoyed, as did the audience. A few jolts, much laughter, a few audible gasps. But I'm interested in the reactions of non-fans to the flick, either you or a friend who've seen it without the luxury of any of the series. Does it stand on its own merits? Call it idle rumination on the gentle art of moviemaking. (Warning: spoilers in comments.)

I really REALLY liked how they did The Operative. It's amazing how they fleshed him out so completely just from that first scene.

Book's death, sad but forward to the plot. Wash ... just stupid and sudden. He is apparently a leaf pinned to the back of a shadowbox in the horticultural department.

Anyway, I'm already looking forward to the next great, original action movie, slated for release next summer. SNAKES ... on a PLANE!!

I've been ruminating on the mechanics of the final death -- but I think it really works there. It sets the tone for the final act, and when Serenity's crew makes its last stand, the tension is already ratcheted to a point that each wound could be their death blow. There's a lot of uncertainty in that finale, and at some point you seriously consider that each of them -- maybe none of them might be making it out alive.

And there were rumors on the Internets that it was actually Tudyk's idea. Which doesn't lessen the blow any, I know.

I read that too, and it is a bit of a salve that Tudyk endorsed the idea. True, it did introduce the possibility of everybody perishing (which wouldn't be a first for Joss), but .... it's WASH!! And I was a bit disappointed in Zoe's non-reaction to it. I know she's supposed to be the stoic one, but come on.

But enough about that. SNAKES!! On a PLANE!
