No, I'm not being facetious. What's the upside of getting the government that the people want if the people want to wage war with their neighbors?

In a stunning development ahead of official election results, Prime Minister Ahmed Qorei said Thursday he and others in the Palestinian Authority government will resign in the wake of Hamas' apparent parliamentary victory.

The announcement followed estimates from Wednesday's election that said Hamas had won a majority of seats in the 132-seat Palestinian Legislative Council, supplanting the ruling Fatah party.

The worst part? Best part?

Hamas can't possibly do a worse job than the prior leadership.

Given that pretty much all concerned want to blow up their neighboring states, I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

Y'know what really pissed me off about the whole Palestinian election? Hearing Bush on the radio going on about how this is a "terrorist government" that doesn't human life and just wants to make war with its neighbors. Does this sound familiar at all? What really got me was how he was going on about how "we, as a government and as a nation, do not support this..."

I was so pissed off, I was yelling "You fucking hypocrite!" at the radio and very nearly swerved into the oncoming lane. I mean, don't get me wrong, it sucks about the Palestinian government, but hypocrisy - especially in the nation's leading figure - is one of the things that never fails to anger me. I find it doubly ironic, considering how Bush is always talking about "bringing the light of democracy to oppressed peoples" - guess what? When people have been oppressed (or think they've been oppressed) long enough, they aren't going to be thinking rationally, and the certainly aren't likely to choose a good form of government. Democracy isn't the solution to everything...

Sorry, didn't mean to write you a novel, I just tend to go on and on when I'm pissed. I'll shut up now. *blushes and ducks head*

Erm, that should be "doesn't value human life. Sorry."

I know exactly what you mean -- I keep revisiting the man who would one day spout out against "judicial activism" (say, in the anti-discrimination laws being struck down) and literally the next day be celebrating the anniversary of Brown v. Board....

I can't say democracy is the best system of government (even, as Churchill suggested, that it's the worst, "except for all the others"), but it does have the sole trait of giving the people the government they deserve. (I'd have been amused if countries would've reacted to the US post-2004 as we did to the Palestinians post-Hamas-election. But we have cruise missiles.)

People are stupid, and the more, the stupider.
