Yeah, any other year, it'd just be presented as D-Day's anniversary. But because of a miscopied passage in Revelations (evidence points to the number of the beast really being 616 in the earliest versions), everyone's all "Oooh, DEVUL DEY!"
Actually, I just read about this the other day. What happened is that letters were used as numbers too when Revelation was originally written (Roman numerals = go fig). Literally, the sum of the letters that spell out Nero's name totalled 616, but that's ascribing too much subtlety to it. It literally looked like this:
Rev 14:18 - "This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is EMPEROR NERO."
What probably happened to confuse 616 to 666 was a particular translation:
"...His number is THAT F***KING BASTARD EMPEROR MOTHERF***ING NERO."
