I've been reading Marvel's Civil War -- hey, it's a huge step up from Infinite Crisis -- and something clicked. Everyone else probably already "got" this and I should be ashamed for even mentioning it aloud, but....

There's a few references to Reed Richards's "Project 49," aka the superhuman prison under construction. Interestingly enough, there's also an uncommon number of references in the dialogue of the series to the fifty states.

...So they're shipping them to Alaska? [wads up paper in hands] ...The bastards!

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] foenix has pointed out that it's Project 42 (as in Douglas Adams), not Project 49 (as in Alaska). I'm an idiot. Just not as big an idiot as Reed.

Augh! NO! I will not let my theory be waylayed by such unimportant factors as...facts!

*headdesk*

...Washington state? That's much more tolerable.

Yeesh! I'm surprised at you. I nearly died when I saw that it was 42. I believe this is what happened:

Niteflite: (drops comic book and starts dancing around) Reed is a Hitchhiker fan! Belgium!

Sister: What are you on?

Niteflite: (shoves comic under sister's nose) Reed's plan is FORTY TWO! Civil War is the answer to life, the universe and everything!

Sister: I don't know you. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go curl up in a fetal position. I suggest you do the same.

I would've been better off if I hadn't just reread the sum total of Grant Morrison's X-Men run, and he approaches numerology like a man possessed. (Of course, in The Invisibles, it was 23 rather than 42....)
