Reports coming out say Cory Lidle, pitcher for the New York Yankees was on board.

This is what I get for stepping away from the office for 30 minutes. It goes from OMG 9-11II WTF to a bad joke without a punchline, from catastrophic to sad and strange.

And actually, ESPN.com has better coverage than CNN.com (if not better play).

Yeah, there'll be jokes to rival JFK Jr around the watercoolers in a day or two...

And yes, it's always interesting when Real News and Sports News intersect, isn't it? There's probably room for a pithy observation regarding where our best reporting holds its focus, but I'm too tired.

When the two do collide...er, intersect, I'm always impressed by the quality of the reporting done by the elite sports reporters and anchors; they're often quite excellent (the death of Mickey Mantle, the '89 quake, 9/11 and its repercussions, Pat Tillman). It's strange how you can get used to them as talking heads and entertainers of their own accord but forget that at their core they're skilled journalists, too.

I am having nightmare visions of the White House issuing a statement that says something like:

"While we extend our condolences to the family of Cory Lidle for this tragic accident that took him away from us too soon...IT WASN'T TERRORISTS! *bootydance* SEE! SEE! WE ARE TOO KEEPING YOU SAFE! YAY GEORGIE! EVERYBODY DANCE NOW! Except you Democrats who didn't believe in us."

On the other hand, I was fully expecting the Party to say something along the lines of "We need MORE power to keep you safe from the Yankees pitching staff! We need more laws that let us interrogate Major League Baseball players without warrants, and to retransmit their games without express written permission from the commissioner!"

Seriously, nothing they say will surprise me anymore.
