MANHATTAN, Kan. - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will present the 146th Landon Lecture at Kansas State University on Nov. 9.

The lecture is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Bramlage Coliseum. Admission will be restricted to Kansas State students, faculty and staff members, Landon Lecture patrons, and a contingent of military service members from Fort Riley.

Oh, joy. And thus campus becomes a nuthouse again. I think this sounds like a good day to take off.

I choose to be heartened by the fact that the Republicans are worried they'll lose races here.

Now, I appreciate that Bush and Rumsfeld WANT to come here but why? We're some small somewhat po-dunk college in the middle of nowhere, USA. This state will STILL be Republican 1,000 years after we're all dead.

I went and saw Bush...I think I skip out on this one.

I think part of it's to reward a Bush loyalist -- Gen. Myers, getting the Military Science Building named after him (I typically think it's a crap idea to name buildings after living people -- doubly so for Pat Roberts Hall, but I like Myers), but also to shore up support in a red state. This year's been scary with red states coming into play. Boyda's got an outside-to-good shot at unseating Ryun, Dems will probably win the governorship and the AG spot (it helps that Phill Kline is despised by the Republican Party almost as much as by Democrats, and I HATE HATE HATE spelling his name with two Ls)....

It's a good part political (albeit awful late in the game), but a good part simple kudos where due. Myers was an erudite and dedicated backer of Bush doctrine -- he's a good soldier.
