WIBW-TV lost a founding family member when Stan Stauffer died at a Topeka hospital on Thursday, losing his battle against cancer at the age of 86. Stan Stauffer was Chairman of the Board and President of Stauffer Communications when the company bought Channel 13 in 1957.

Stauffer, along with his father Oscar and brother John, helped lead the station and the Topeka Capital-Journal to a higher level of journalistic excellence during the time its Kansas newspapers and stations were run by the family.

Stauffer graduated from KU in 1942, and as a member of the KU Alumni Association, donated $200,000 to create the Stan and Madeline Stauffer Multimedia Newsroom at KU four years ago.

Everyone who knew him is recognizing Stan Stauffer as a giant in the field of newspaper and television journalism in the state of Kansas.

Yeah, I saw that on CJO.... And as much as I got tired of hearing his loud phone calls all the time, I gotta give the guy props for coming into work every day well into his 80s. He was a nice guy.
