K-State beats defending national champ Texas in Manhattan. Calling it a "stunner" doesn't really encompass the nature of the win -- this is a team that, at times, gets even odds on finding its own way out of the locker room. There were a few moments of raw, unbridled stupidity and ineptitude by both teams, but the Wildcat defense bit down hard, and from the sounds of the fireworks and screaming outside, the community is going stark raving mad. The crowd swarmed the field -- it's the first time they've had reason to do that in a long, long time.

Just can't wait to read [livejournal.com profile] patchsassy's reaction.

Strictly personal to Gary Thorne: Kansas State is K-S-U. The University of Kansas is K-U. Please to not be interchanging the two, yes? And, national media, can we have a moratorium on Wizard of Oz jokes, please, for the love of God?

Heh

I was listening to some of the pregame show while I was in Ray's Apple Market shopping this afternoon, and they were really playing the expectations game, pointing out that the team wasn't thought to have more than four wins in them for the entire year, and that it was amazing that they had six so far. They all but said, "They still kinda suck, but everyone expected them to REALLY suck!"

Re: Heh

Yup. In fact, I believe ESPN pegged them to be cellar-dwellers in the Big 12 North this year, and instead they came close to playing for the title (if A&M knew how to hold on to a lead, there'd still be a possibility).

They're still not a great team, but they've certainly had some fantastic moments along the way.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That's my reaction. And yes, I was on the field with everyone else.

That game was fucking amazing.

GO STATE!

Yes, indeed....

Agreed. I accompanied my wife to the polling place Tuesday. As I still am registered in Kansas, I sat off to the side to wait. The polling officials asked if I was voting and I explained the situation. One of them said something about Dorothy. I chuckled but politely told them it gets old. Maybe they won't do that to the next Kansan they meet. Changing minds one person at a time.

I was flipping around last night and caught a game where the commentators where discussing the top 10. I thought I heard one mention that Texas was losing. I couldn't believe it, so I found the game and, sure enough, the fourth quarter was starting and KSU was ahead. Unbelievable.

I kept coming back to it and watched all of the last three minutes as Texas mounted a comeback. I still have some remnant of the 80's fan in me that remembers the Toilet Bowl series, especially when KU-KSU played to a 6-6 tie and KSU ended the season 0-10-1. A small part of me was expecting them to roll over. They didn't and the victory was great.

Two out of three wins on My Yahoo! home page scoreboard; KSU, WSU basketball, and the Air Force loss.

Uh, yeah... I was about ready to send an email to ABC. We are not KU. Not, not, not KU.

My favorite was during the pre-game show when one of the guys asked the other two sports guys what K-State had to do to win and they laughed and laughed and said, "Get Texas' quarterback to play for them." Ha! All we had to do was take him out of the game. Hahahaha! I stayed home last night after the win because I just knew it was going to be too crazy out there.

Gotta remember that Thorne really should be calling hockey games, but since the NHL went WTF, he has to pay the bills somehow.

Keith Jackson ... hell, Kevin Harlan would never get that wrong.

So Ron Prince just bought himself at least a three-year honeymoon with this win.

Just remember, Mack Brown's first ever big wins occured last season...(yeah, us UNC-CH alums carry grudges). Maybe that's KSU's problem though; they need to schedule top 10 schools rather than cupcakes :-)
