Not sure if this counts as a spoiler as it's speculation albeit intriguingly-grounded speculation, and thrown out as an idea. Not mine, but seen online, and too cracktastic not to be shared.
TPTB have been inflicting Nikki and Paulo, the two obnoxious newbie castaways, on the audience at every possible opportunity, at the expense of other ancillary characters who don't get nearly enough face-time anymore. I mean, what about Bernard and Rose? When was the last time we've seen them, anyway?
Funny, we haven't seen Rose and Bernard since before the hatch blew, right?
What if...Desmond, in his non-anchored temporal state, prevented them from getting on the plane? And Nikki and Paulo replaced them?
It's insultingly pandering enough and callous enough to the characters to be true, isn't it? Bubbles and Xerxes get their own episode next week, I believe. Gee, I can't wait. *checks pulse*

I enjoy watching this show as much as I enjoy hating it. It's kind of weird that way.
