My afternoon can best be summarized in one word: Portal. Started it just as the Giants and Dolphins were kicking off at Wembley, and finished at the top of the fourth inning of Game 4 of the 2007 World Series featuring the Boston Red Sox and...hmm...you know, I could swear there was supposed to be another team playing....

And yes, fantastic end-credit sequence, too. No, not a huge, epic, takes-weeks-to-finish game, but a hell of a lot of fun, and plenty of mind-bending physics-doesn't-work-that-way moments in the process.

I think I probably finished it in maybe four hours, tops? Probably a bit less. It's about the right length, really - it ends just as the one gimmick starts getting played out with the relatively limited setting. But it's definitely a lot of fun, and there's a lot of there there for future development.

I was thinking of picking up the Orange Box just for Team Fortress 2, but I've heard several glowing reviews of Portal. Think it would run on a Athalon 64?

Well, you know my system specs, and I was having audio chokes, and this is one game where you'll want to enjoy the audio.

Haven't even thought about TF2 yet. Just not in a FPS mood lately.

You might want to give the Flash version a whirl, to give you a taste of the moist, delicious cake.

Not that I've played it, meself. But I heard Jonathan Coulton wrote the end song, so I had to go find it and download that sucker.

I confess that was the deal-maker for me, too. And as delightful as the song is -- and it is -- when you play through the endgame, you have a greater appreciation for the literal nature of the lyrics....

One day! One day, I will experience the wonderfulness that is a companion cube.
