...and raise you $6 million more in punitive damages. Goodbye, Westboro Baptist Church. Feel free to protest another funeral if you'd like to make another donation. (Collection agencies against Phelpsites. Thank you, God.)

Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten applauded the jury's ruling.

“I think there will be a lot of smiling people in Topeka tonight who will be pleased with the verdict,” he said. “For far too long, this group has been an embarrassment to Topekans."

Bunten said Topeka residents have never approved of Westboro Church’s message or its picketing.

“And I believe I speak for our citizens when I extend our congratulations to Mr. Snyder, the judge and the jury in Maryland for expressing not only their own position, but ours as well,” he said.

Waaaay overdue, and unfortunately they'll probably get it dismissed somehow, but damn it warms the cockles of my heart to hear.

The only sad thing is that the church is appealing - and that they have said that they will continue to protest at funerals regardless of this lawsuit or any future lawsuits...
