Seriously, I'm sure there's a nugget of a good idea underneath the new tagging features SixApart has unveiled. But even setting aside 6A's abysmal track record in public relations, I'm even more worried by just the mob mentality and how users tagging posts is going to play out (as someone asks: what's the appeals process?)....

Keep me posted. I'm going to just close my eyes and pretend nothing's happening.

Edit: how long until someone makes a bot to spider LJ and flag random entries? And in a possibly related question, how much caffeine have I ingested today?

I've had LJ spider hider turned on from day one.

Even if they do, and say you get mob-mentality flagged... what that means is that kids can't access your content. Well, not even. It means it gets stuck behind an lj-cut and doesn't get indexed by Google and other search engines. And if someone has their age listed as under 14 (or 18, depending), they can't see it.

I... uh... honestly can't see a problem with that. Am I missing something?

Ah, I see what they did there. That's all? Hrm. I was expecting an auto-ban/purge or turning the default font-style of all your posts to "blink."

That does take the sting off. I do still worry about the amorphous definitions of some of the flag settings (illegal where? how offensive?) but it's beginning to gel in my mind a bit better now. It's been a...chaotic night.

As ever, you're a voice of reason. Are you sure you're in fandom?

Heh. As for the amorphous settings, I figure they'll get defined through use... and I'm glad to see the flagging's not anonymous to the staff, so they can tell if someone's got an account created specifically to flag and/or harass.

As for fandom, I've been a member of Fandom Wank for like 4 years now. If any site gives an idea of what *not* to do, that's it. ;) It's oddly rational... in its own way...
