After thumbing through some more reviews (especially some of the expectations and assumptions of the negatives) and spoilers, I'm no longer considering The Dark Knight an outside possibility for Oscars.

No, I don't think that possibility is outside anymore. I think that Ledger's work will be good enough to insure him the nomination, and the combination of that work and the sentimentality of the Academy will win it for him. Though I'm still hearing good stuff about Revolutionary Road and it has the sheen of your typical late-season Oscar runner, I don't see Ledger not winning. And if the film holds together half as well as the (admittedly bordering-on-hyperbole) reviews indicated, don't see any reason this film stops at one win.

I think they're going to have to give Ledger the Oscar because A-who knows what he would have done if he hadn't died; B-he deserved it for Brokeback Mountain, but he had the unfortunate luck of being up against Phillip Seymore Hoffman for Capote (which, if you never seen it, is GREAT) and C-if he's half as good as they say he was, he could have wiped the floor with most of last year's candidates and D-they're running out of times to give it to him.

That being said, I'm going to go see his last film, because between the excellent cast and Terry Gilliam directing, I think it'll be quite the show.

Gilliam's one of my favorite filmmakers -- I actually appreciate his failures more than I do most people's successes. He's ambitious and has a distinct vision and I wish I could say that about most Hollywood efforts.

Hoffman's Capote was perfect, agreed -- though if you haven't seen Neil Simon's Murder By Death you really really should. Truman Capote, Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, David Niven, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell...it's fantastic. Stupid silly fun, but no less fantastic for it. More than a bit un-PC, but it makes me smile just thinking about it. "Answer simple, but question very hard."

Assuming that the online schedule bears any resemblance to the actual one (no guarantee there...online last week had only one screen on Hellboy, with a 4PM Friday show, the schedule posted outside the theater had screenings at 4:05 and 4:20, while the actual times were 4:00 and 4:15), I'll be seeing the 3PM showing tomorrow. :)

The nearest IMAX theater is apparently in Olathe. Rrrrgh.

And word from [livejournal.com profile] rootology that there's a Watchmen trailer. That's just not fair. (On the other hand, it gives me something to do before the CPU fan comes in....)
