This icon was borne of trepidation after watching the first episode of House and fearing that FOX would Firefly it into oblivion without giving it the chance it needed to catch its footing. Obviously the show survived and prospered, and I think tonight it finally just...failed. I remember thinking "Ah, Breckin Meyer, so this will be the worst episode of House ever," and "This will only be watchable if he gets punched in the face every five minutes." Sadly, came up ten punches short, but oh God I've never hated an episode of this show before.

I'm actually almost offended at the Cuddy subplot. She sees the obnoxious PI rooting around in her desk and doesn't immediately have him arrested? Wrong.

For that matter, the entire PI subplot grows tedious. The man with preternatural diagnostic and deductive skills needs a private investigator? I'm getting the feeling these episodes are written by people who've never seen an episode. The PI's interactions with the entire staff -- aside from his first scene -- never remotely ring true. I'm not sure if this is an actor out of his league, a script written by a turnip, or an unholy combination thereof.

"Hello, do you remember us? We're the supporting cast. We're in the opening credits. Two of us don't show up at all this episode, and those who do have nothing resembling dignity."

Hell, even House -- you know, titular character, portrayal of which is the bedrock of the show -- has been so grating, but worse, predictably grating that I could guess when he'd toss in embarrassing non-sequiturs during the DD. It's not misanthropy, it's just buffoonery, now, and rote in its attempts to be outrageous.

The sad thing is this has been ratcheting up over the course of the season (and some aspects last season) to the point where it's not dismissible as aberrant showrunning. I'm glad Hugh Laurie is raking in the dough, but I wish it was a more endurable endeavor.

Stopped watching at the end of second season. I saw it was heading for crappitude, heard it turned back briefly but still couldn't be bothered.

What a waste of a perfectly good Hugh Laurie.
