Finally, a picspam mission statement -- why, how, and what makes the cut and what doesn't.
1. Images are culled primarily from the Toothpaste for Dinner LJ images page, but occasionally from LJs on my friends list or just at complete random. Only once has there been a link to a non-LJ site, and that was to Fark. But I can't rule out this happening again.
1a. The format of a picspam link is generally twofold: an image URL as included from the original LJ page, along with a link to the LJ in question. The rationale is that if you like/are intrigued by the image, maybe you'll not only want more information on it, but also be interested in the LJ poster, as well. I've found several of my current LJ friends this way.
1b. Yes, the images are hotlinked. Mostly this is to preserve fidelity to the original posts. Partially it's laziness and not wanting to write a script to download the pics and link to them elsewhere. Another big piece is that to do that would be "stealing," moreso than hotlinking, to me.
1c. If you don't like it, let me know and I'll take it down, change the links, whatever. I'm not doing this to put your nose out of joint; I'm doing it to help my f-list kill some time.
2. Why choose a particular image? Because it caught my eye. Because I found it amusing, or cute, or thought-provoking, or neat, or revelatory, or indicative of my current mood. Not to infuriate, not to annoy, not to cause distress.
2a. This means a lot of squirrels, birds, funny-looking cats and webcartoons. Sorry. I have my weaknesses.
2b. Yes, this includes Internet fads that have long since lost originality and probably irritate you, sorry.
3. I try to keep the images safe for work. Once or twice there'll be an image with Naughty Words in it, and some may be risqué, but anything with actual nudity is right out.
4. I don't do gore. Icky, maybe, but not outright gore. Nothing over approximately .3 goatses. If it provokes an "Ew!" that's okay, but if it's an "OHMYGOD" of abject horror then not so much. Squirm, but not retch.
5. I keep images that I know are triggering to my f-list out. No cutting, no spiders.
6. I don't explain the images. No captions, no clarifiers, no disclaimers. Words clutter the picspam. Even when some of the links -- like the Tetris blocks below -- have tons of related and similarly excellent images.
7. The above is fluid and subject to change, including by request. Don't want any more naughty words? Nothing overtly political? No more ick? Let me know. Yeah, I'm mostly doing this for myself, but not insignificantly for y'all, too. Collaborate (and listen).

Hi! ;)
Even when those crop up, I can just scroll another few lines and finding something to crack me up. I'm sure if I did something like this, I'd do the same thing, and my tastes wouldn't match up with everyone else's either. I love these things, and share 'em with friends all the time. Keep it up!
