Kansas City has traded everyone's favorite vegetarianHeimlich-maneuvering tight end to Atlanta for a puppy and some bits of string. And thus my expectations for the Chefs in '09 are now nil. Grr.
Unless they were planning on drafting GOD next year, I don't see what this buys them. I'm afraid that Pioli might just bring to the team his N'England connections and nothing else. And I hate seeing a franchise player leave a team under any circumstances, but this is just...inexplicable.
Regardless, the AFC West once again becomes a race to the bottom. Perhaps they do it deliberately; the Chiefs and Raiders fans must get at least some satisfaction at watching the Broncos "win" the worst division in football and then get humiliated in the playoffs. Again.
I was impressed with the number of weapons the Chefs had coming into the season -- Cassel was probably the best QB the Chefs had on their roster since Jeff Gannon (yes, keep Elvis Grbac but run Gannon out of town, that's brilliant, Carl), match him up with Tony, maybe free Dwayne Bowe on occasion, maybe try some Larry Johnson if he's out on probation and decides he wants to play. If you lose your go-to guy, though, the effectiveness of those options diminishes significantly, and without TG, I don't see that they have a core attack to base the offense around anymore.
It's looking like the AFC Worst is going to be across-the-board worse than last year, with each team taking a pretty sharp hit in its roster, so I don't expect the standings (or eventual outcome) to be much different from '08. There's only one potential wildcard I can think of, but we'll discuss him soon enough.
I'd have faith in Pioli. He's not building for this next season, but for multiple years down the line. Trading Gonzalez for a second-rounder seems like great value to me, though I agree it's sad to see great players not finish their careers with one team.
I love, love love LOVE Jake Delhomme but...um....The Panthers just signed him to another 5 years. Did the management miss the last game of last season?
Thank God I grew up in Pittsburgh and usually attend one Bears game a season so I can have distractions.
I like Jake the Man, too, but five years is a bit steep for any quarterback in this league who isn't league-MVP caliber, and I wouldn't put Jake in that list. Or anybody whose first name isn't "Tom" or "Peyton," really.
However, I did like the news that the Lions have already found their #1 giraffe pick.

Edit: San Diego sports radio is ecstatic about this, as you can probably imagine.

Would have posted this yesterday but my Internets hated me.
It baffles my mother and I why they would trade anyone of his caliber, but then again, it's Kansas City. They don't need a reason to be moronic.
