It takes a special kind of person to rack up $18,000 in parking tickets and $13,000 in interest for not paying them off.

She said she accepts responsibility for the tickets, but nearly eight years later, she questions whether the amount is reasonable.

“You want to recoup costs and penalties, I get that,” the Topeka woman said. “But when the interest is nearly equal to the principal, there’s something diametrically wrong.”

Remember, she's a special kind of person (if her use of the word "diametrically" wasn't a clue itself):

Marcotte considers herself a responsible person who went to college and had worked the same job for 13 years. The lapse in judgment was out of character, she said.

...diametrically wrong?

I'm sorry, I have to go away for a while and try to come to terms with that.

I was also not impressed with her use of "coinciding," though she appeared to use "quandary" correctly, possibly accidentally.

what a moron.

maybe i'll use that same excuse about my mortgage - there is something diametrically wrong that i'll be paying interest equal the the principal.

*rolls eyes*

To be fair, unless the writer was working from her written statement, that particular error is probably not hers. Rather, credit (or blame) for that one more properly belongs, in somewhat equal measure, to the writer of the article and to the editor(s)... not that the correct apportioning of blame should make you feel any better, since it means that professional wordsmiths in this country cannot adequately carry out their craft.

And now I must own up to mine own error: your question pertained to our esteemed host's choice of phrasing.

And incidentally, his choice of wording was correct. For his intention, "rack" is indeed the word he needed.

I'm seeing "wrack" used in much the same way as "rack" anymore -- I think they'll eventually converge and become grammatically synonymous. (Me, I always tend toward the latter, if only for a childhood ill-spent playing pool.)
