Kansas abortion doc and political lightning rod George Tiller shot dead in his church. The official response from Operation Rescue:

"We are shocked at this morning’s disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

I don't agree with abortion, but it's a choice, and not mine to make. Damn that's messed up :/

It's a complex enough issue and entirely dependent on one's upbringing and personal experiences that I don't begrudge anyone their own views on the matter -- but I have no pity for people armed with just enough scripture to sanctify their own unholy impulses and acts.

And it's been a while since we've had a heartland-borne act of terror, so I guess we were due.

I see your stance, but when someone kills someone over their views, it's a bit extreme

Oh, I can't agree more. I can understand and respect someone being pro-life or pro-choice and even to the most extreme degrees, but at no point in this debate can I rationalize literal murder, and I fear the mindset that can. I'm sure there's a twisted statistical rationale at play, but I'll wait until we hear from the actual shooter -- who's apparently now in custody.

The debate was never pretty, I understand, but I know that somehow it's about to become much worse.

I think a LOT of things are going to get worse in the near future. It is a scary time we are living in

Once again reminding me why, in my main fictional universe, Wichita got nuked in 1991. :)

Funny how all the anti-abortion folks are suddenly all "oh no, just because we call these doctors doing legal procedures the worst names imaginable, we certainly never wanted anyone to actually DO anything about it. No no."

Wink wink.

Indeed--especially considering the phrasing 'Bring him to justice' in their oh-so-heartfelt response. :-/

Everyone has a right to their opinion one way or the other. What they DON'T have is the right to force their opinion on others. This senseless act of violence is outrageous. And to think humans are so arrogant as to believe ~ especially in this day and age ~ that their way is the only way. I don't understand people who think that if you don't believe in the so-called One True God and follow his scriptures slavishly than you deserve to burn in Hell... so what's the harm in helping God out by killing an abortionist? He deserves it. Right?

WRONG!

Stupidity just pisses me off. Doubly so when that stupidity is backed by scripture.

I will be attending a candlelight vigil Thursday

It's not the debate over abortion that really bugs me. It's the fact that blood is being shed because they are doing what they believe is right.

What is happening to the Land of the Free?

Re: I will be attending a candlelight vigil Thursday

They've been told they're doing God's work, that babies are being slaughtered, and that they have a moral responsibility to stop it. And those who incite are not being held responsible.

Friend of mine went to the Wichita vigil, which I might've gone to but not anything local. Shock's been replaced with disgust and disdain and the lingering awareness that things are just going to get worse.

Actions such as that are never justifiable, no matter the reason(though I may not say a word if a certain OBL met that fate). Bombings of abortion clinics were never tolerated either. Operation Rescue's response was purely political, same as Sinn Féin's responses to IRA attacks in Northern Ireland. My stance on abortion is that it never should be used as a birth control, with perhaps the exception of rape. People stand on it being a choice. Well choice is good, but you also have the choice of using a condom or other contraceptive. I don't mean to sound high and mighty, but that's my opinion. If ever I get to know someone, and they reveal they had an abortion, I may give my point of view in a civil way, but will just move on from there. I stand by my point of view but I will never work to force it on anyone, as that will remove more than their right to have an abortion. You can't prune the tree of liberty without taking more than just one right away.

On a somewhat related note...

I just came across this article on an arson case in Maine, of a topless (yup) coffee shop that had been deliberately destroyed. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31086037/
Thankfully no one was hurt, but this is another sad example of people taking extreme measures against someone they don't agree with. Nobody should ever be taught that such actions are justifiable. People can disagree, they can work to pass ordinances to make their point, but to actively destroy or kill is WRONG. I don't care what your church believes.

Re: On a somewhat related note...

Yeah, I'd been intrigued by the coffee shop as a hypothetical exercise -- I never expected it to get torched, mainly because it's in a blue state (my home state, as it turns out) and while abortion definitely angries the blood, a strip/slurp club seems offensive but relatively benign.

It's been a busy week for the moral majority.

(And yeah, nobody wants to get an abortion, but there are moments when it's the only feasible option, and I don't want to deny anyone the right to control what's happening to their own bodies. But that's just my two cents.)
