Interesting note: when Clint Malarchuk was injured (warning: much more graphic than the earlier video) in 1989, taking a skate to the jugular (as opposed to the carotid artery, which Richard Zednik got severed last night), nine spectators fainted, two had heart attacks and three of his fellow players vomited on the ice. And it's not hard to see why. (Being a goalie, Malarchuk didn't have much mobility, and instead of getting to the bench on his own like Zednik did, Malarchuk had to wait for his trainer to get to him. Thankfully, his trainer happened to be an Army medic in Vietnam and kept pressure on the wound until Malarchuk was getting sutures.) And now you know, and knowing is half the battle -- the other half relies mostly on keeping your blood inside your body.
