Just posted to my LJ. May be my last LJ-exclusive entry. We'll see.

Found in my inbox:

Your Paid account add-on of Extra Userpics (1 package) for LiveJournal user "sigma7" will expire in 12 days, at which time your paid account will revert to its standard features....

...If you have any questions or requests, please contact us by replying to this email. We want to keep you happy. :)

No, you don't.

Related: I've exported my LJ to Dreamwidth. LJ's elevated customer disservice to brave new levels, so I'm probably changing scenery soon.

God, Livejournal, you can't do anything right, can you? You roll out a patch for a feature that wasn't broken, infuriate everyone, and you just double down on it. At least the English-speaking staff is cordial in its helplessness.

Honestly, I could give a damn about comment subject lines. But the manner in which this decision was arrived at and inflicted upon the userbase (and subsequent oblivious shrugs from those in charge) disgusts me. But I shouldn't be surprised by now, I know.

If LJArchive was actually working I'd feel a lot better; as it is I'm taking a long hard look at all my options here. Not looking forward to manually backing up nine years of posts and comments.

I think I like LJ more when it's down.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aardy1 for pointing the way: On LiveJournal, using someone's full name (even when it's public information) counts as "invasion of privacy", against all common sense and not to comply with any law. On TypePad, another Six Apart service, it was deemed an invasion of privacy for a blogger to mention the first name and surname of someone he was writing about. But he's the founder of Tribe.net, so when he said this was nonsense, the CEO of Six Apart agreed, and VP of Customer Service Doug Bryan assured him that "Six Apart will only interfere with your content if we possess a legitimate court order or if there is a reported DMCA violation". Furthermore, "In this particular situation, as Barak replied in his email to you, the Six Apart employee who initiated the request to you was filling in for our normal TOS person who is out on maturity leave. They simply made a mistake and completely misread the situation. Your post is not in violation with TypePad terms of service. We apologize for the misunderstanding."

I also got a reply from LJ Abuse today, about shamanix's claim that they only look at friend-locked posts in reports of copyright violation, or serious violation of US law. His statement was "not entirely correct". Oh, LJ Abuse people giving users incorrect information? What a first!

More interesting reading to be had at the LJAbuse blog. I'm trying not to be gloomy about these recent revelations, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't scouted out alternatives to LJ. Still, I like the community here, and I'd be sad to leave it. Edit to clarify: No impending plans to leave, but I like to have a contingency plan.

In case you missed it, the artist formerly known as [livejournal.com profile] alexlucard has been stalked by a "vampire hunter" whose name I can't mention lest LJAbuse can my account. No, seriously. I'd go off more, but really, the last thing I want to do is put my fate in the hands of LJAbuse right now.

Anyhow, this is primarily a note to let any friends of Lucard who haven't found out yet that (1) he was right and (2) it doesn't matter, he's now off LJ forever:

Anyway, due to a NDA that was part of the settlement I can’t talk about much. Yet. I have to kind of scour the document to see what bits of comedy gold I can give you guys. However in true sore loser fashion, I got perma-banned after rubbing their faces in this whole thing, this time ont he grounds of simply “Refusal of service” which is totally legal. So alas, I won, I got a lot of lolz out of this, it didn’t have to go to court because they realized they had about as much a chance to win as the Unabomber did, but I remain forever a pariah from a blogging community that feels they can ignore both US and international law simply because they want to. Oh well, c’est la vie, no?

Lucard has a new site, though, and there's an RSS feed for those who want to add it to their friends page: [livejournal.com profile] alucard_rss, and you can add it here.

The whole mess is more than a little frustrating and depressing.
