I'd argue post-9/11 that New York has something of a peculiar metropolitan psychology about it now. I don't think it's necessarily unique, but I think it's enough to distinguish it from many cities. Some urban areas (and college towns, even) are just more prone to violence for awful reasons (sporting events, even). I'm not saying LA is one of 'em, but it did occur to me.
