It's almost December. Why are the tornado sirens sounding? And why must they be during the final seconds of the Chargers game? And why must the 'Skins be driving into San Diego territory?

Meh. I'd go downstairs, but the storm's not really going to reach for at least 45 more minutes (despite the sirens), and if I can't get the birds downstairs, I might as well stay up here with 'em....

My thoughts exactly... well, at least about the tornado sirens. I was quietly reading a book and watching the rain... not realizing that we are having severe weather. Isn't it too cold for tornadoes?

Chalk it up to global warming, I guess. Meh. In this state, anything's possible....

S'okay. My favorite player won the Chargers game in OT. So w00t w00t w00t w00t. Repeat.

Earlier Mr. Bee was all like, "We're under a tornado warning." I kept insisting that they just had the wrong graphic up.

Oops.

It's pretty warm outside. I've been running around in a t-shirt...

Shows you how often I've been out of the house today, huh? ;-)

Just to satisfy the curiosity of your old pal who lives in the greater San Diego area, why exactly do you follow the Chargers? Is it because of Marty? Is it strictly a Tomlinson thing (since he is, as you say, your favorite player)?

I'm just curious, since I've never known the Chargers to have a following outside of San Diego (or among people who used to live here).

I first got into football in '80, right during the height of the Air Coryell years. I enjoy the passing attack, and nobody did it better than the Bolts and especially Dan Fouts. Yes, he was my hero. And it's never wavered. Well, okay, maybe a bit during the Ryan Leaf years. And there was a severe moment of doubt when they released Junior, leaving me with a closet of #55 jerseys (including the blessed powder blue).

Oddly, many of my former Wildcats have ended up there, most notably Andre Coleman (scored a TD in the Supa Bowl!), and most recently Darren Sproles. The Chefs are still my strong second-favorite team, but the Bolts are still my #1.

Odd story: went to the 1993 Copper Bowl (Wyoming vs. K-State) in Arizona, stopped in Las Cruces, NM, and ate out at Chili's, wearing one of my Junior Seau jerseys. Server had a minor freak-out: "Where did you get that jersey?" "Uhm. Topeka?"

Ah, yes, those were good times. Fouts, Winslow, Chandler, Joyner, Jefferson for a little while, Ed Luther playing in the fourth quarter because they were already up by five scores... We may never see the likes of that offense again. And they still never made the Super Bowl. Ugh, the memories of that game against the Bengals... brr...

I was stoked when I heard Dan Fouts was going to be on Monday Night Football. Such a shame he became a casualty of the Great Miller Experiment: he and Al Michaels would have been a fine duo even when the network decided to cut ties with Dennis.

By any chance did you hear the collective gasp from parts southwest the day Junior was let go? I couldn't listen to sports talk radio for months after that.

Your powder blues are strong, grasshoppa. I can't top that, but I do still have a child-size white-with-bolt helmet somewhere.

It disturbs me that the Chargers could run the tables, go 12-4, and still miss the playoffs. I suppose it would be some kind of city sports karma for the Padres winning their division at 82-80 earlier this year.

I was on the phone with [livejournal.com profile] beeform when the news came about the Dennis Miller/Dan Fouts team. The headline named Miller but not Fouts, so I called, excited. But when I got to the part in the story about Fouts, I screamed. A few times.

Letting Junior go was a travesty. Okay, so he wasn't the Junior of old, but he was a hell of a team player and seemed (from a distance, at least) to be the exemplar of a player you wanted involved in the community, especially coming from USC. I'll never understand that, salary issues or not. I didn't hear an outrage, but I'm not sure if it was because of the distance or because of my own screaming. I also wished smitings because of the loss of Darren Bennett, baddest punter evar. And Stan Humphries -- panda-shaped QB -- has there ever been a player less aware of his own vulnerabilities and shortcomings and personal welfare? Not the most gifted QB ever. But quite possibly the gutsiest. Even when he's knocked unconscious on the field....

I remember the Bengals game. I remember listening to the AFC championship game on the radio, on my knees, literally praying for the kick to go wide. Has it been eleven years already?

My favorite teams are still....

--The Chargers
--The Chefs
--whoever's playing Denver
--whoever's playing Oakland
--whoever's playing the Giants (damn you, Eli)

Ah, pigskin. And bless the gridiron gods for granting me LaDainian Tomlinson on both of my fantasy teams this year.
