Trailer for NBC's Day One. Doesn't look as embarrassing as ABC's Impact, but then a televised drunken colonoscopy wouldn't be that embarrassing.

While on the topic of television, Sci-Fi is now officially Syfy. Sygh.

Hey, how's Torchwood looking? Watchable? Entertaining?

Joe Sakic retires after 20 years of playing professional hockey. If you need to know nothing else about him, know that he's the first NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup and forego the traditional victory lap, handing it instead to 21-season vet Ray Bourque, who'd come to Colorado in search of a championship.

In other hockey news, Marian Hossa signed a 12-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks for $62.8 million. The staggering part of this deal is that he's now under contract until the year 2021. I'll still be putting "1998" on all my checks. (Right, when was the last time any of us wrote a check?)

Parting shot: locomotive vs. tornado. About as one-sided as crab vs. pipe. I guess nature is now tied.

I downloaded the first season of Torchwood a while back, and man. It's kind of awful. I gave it a few episodes (7 or 8?) in hopes that it would improve, but it's marketed as a Doctor Who 'for adults' and thus has a lot of swearing and gratuitous sex that does little to add to the lame plots, 100% unlikable characters (except for Captain Jack, who is woefully underutilized), and isn't as much fun. There was one fun episode called "Random Shoes" that I liked, but the rest were too much like an oversexed, melodramatic version of the farting alien episodes of Who for my taste.

Oh, God, the Slitheen. You know when they fail to be convincing villains for Sarah Jane that there's no hope.

I'd heard good things about its mini-series -- maybe end-dates make better fiction all the way 'round -- but nothing from reputable sources just yet. I have faith in Jack Barrowman, but the rest of the lot are unknown quantities to me. Except Russell T Davies, and...being a known quantity isn't always an asset.

I've watched a few of the middle bits, and I actually liked it. Seemed less silly than Doctor Who. More just brain-free media crack than any serious sci-fi, though.

Sadly, I must concur, although I found it slightly more watchable. The biggest issue I had with it was how inconsistent the characters were throughout the first series and the first half of the second series - it felt like all the writers were working independently of each other, referring to the same show bible but not reading each others' scripts to get a feel for how the characters were developing. But to be fair, around the middle of the second season they seemed to hit their stride - there was a much more noticeable continuity in the character development, and while a lot of motivations are still unclear, it started to feel more like a story and less like several different fanfics turned into episodes. So at this point I'm adopting a wait-and-see approach with the third series.

WOW. Nice footage. Especially watching that tanker car at the end. Eek! (Though the dude's a dumbass for the caption...)

Have to wonder what it was that did take that train out. Looked a lot like snow going on there, and no way that engine would have stayed if a tornado hit. Was quite cool watching the rest of the train catch up. "What is that? Oh, hullo, just the rest of the train.....RUN!!!"
